Maintaining public charter schools

In September a state Supreme Court ruling threatened the future of public charter schools in our state. With education inequality being one of the greatest challenges facing Washington students I sponsored legislation to preserve the schools.

Approved by voters in 2012, charter schools are one of the many tools we have to strengthen Washington’s overall education system and ensure all children have access to a high quality education.

The legislation passed with broad bipartisan support and addresses the concerns of the court by directing the funding to come from state lottery revenues, which are not dedicated to traditional public schools.
